Thanksgiving quote of the night

Published November 27, 2010 by Cassie

“Yeah, this cranberry sauce tastes like it has too much wine in it, and I’m a wine person.” -My nine year old niece.

A real post up soon! Complete with pictures from Thanksgiving and beyond! Well…a sad amount of Thanksgiving pictures, as I forgot to take pictures once we got down to the eating.

I love tiramisu. Call it blasphemous, but my favorite tiramisu for years was the one on the Carabbas menu. Yes, a chain restaurant, but the tiramisu was perfect. Not too rummy, not too marscaponey…just right. And big enough to split between two people!

Sadly, they took the tiramisu off their regular menu last year. Without asking me first, mind you. So now I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect replacement tiramisu. Tonight I had dinner at a local Italian restaurant, Fresco, which was delicious. If you’re in Gainesville anytime soon, check it out! Of course, if you are in Gainesville you’ve probably already been there. I’m still discovering the town and so every time I stumble upon a great restaurant its a great treat and I want to tell everyone I know about it!

…and I’m usually the last to discover it. Typical.

But anyway: tiramisu. When I saw it on the menu I just had to get a piece to go. I ate it later with a cup of tea and some raspberries piled on.

It looked more attractive in person, I swear. The raspberries look a bit awkwardly placed, I see. Whatever. I never claimed to be good at staging food for photographs. Just trust me, it was close to perfect.

Support Tampa Bay!

Tampa Bay is one of the cities on the shortlist for USA’s bid for the 2022 World Cup. Support Tampa! I may be 32 when the World Cup (hopefully!) comes to the US, but I’ll be damned if I miss any games in Tampa!

Go here to learn about the bid and bring the World Cup to the US!

December 2 is the day the bid decision is revealed by FIFA. GO USA BID!

Aw, shark farts!

That’s going to be my new swear word that I incorporate into my daily vocabulary. Maybe its just because I’m sleep deprived, but after watching this clip of 30 Rock on youtube, I just died laughing:

I’m a little too much like Liz Lemon for my own good. As relatable as she is, I’m well aware that having friends text me to say “Just started watching 30 rock. Liz Lemon IS you!!” is not entirely a positive thing.

Maybe I should give up my affinity for Night Cheese.

Just now, I dropped a piece of cake with chocolate frosting on the bed. Of course I ate the bit of cake, but there was a mess of frosting left on the sheet. My immediate thought was, “What Would Liz Lemon Do?”

Of course I licked the frosting off the bed. It couldn’t be wasted. I’ll sponge the rest off before I go to sleep…I suppose.

This is probably why I’m single.

Today I made homemade pasta sauce! I went to Fresh Market yesterday to pick up some clotted cream for Scone Night, and they have gorgeous heirloom tomatoes on sale.

I wish I’d remembered to take a picture of them before I blanched them, but alas…I didn’t. So just take my word for it,they were beautiful. Here’s a picture from Google of one type I bought, the Neves Azorean Red:

And I’m not positive, but I believe the yellow tomato I bought was a Brandywine Yellow:

I love heirloom tomatoes. I don’t think they taste particularly different from your run of the mill plum tomato, but they just feel extra special to cook with. I think its the word “heirloom,” it makes me feel like I’m cooking with cool vintage tomatoes. And if there’s one thing I love, its anything vintage.

Anyway, I’m quite sleepy, so I think I’ll just post some pictures I took of the process.

Blanched, peeled, and ready to chop.

It’s starting to look like sauce!

Dinner is served! Some baked chicken and angel hair pasta to go with the sauce. Delicioso.

Now if only I hadn’t almost started a fire during the process…

That’s a story for another time. RIP Cookie Sheet.

p.s. Real Madrid won today! Still undefeated!

I bought a lovely coat today! Well actually, they didn’t have it in my size at my local Old Navy, so I called my mother and asked her to have a look at the store in my hometown. Being the wonderful mother that she is, she found the coat in my size!

I love plaid. I love peacoats. When the two come together in one garment, a magical aligning of stars happens, and the result is cozy, versatile lumberjack chic:

We’re having a bit of a cold snap in Florida right now (it’s under 50 degrees! Time to break out the electric blankets and thermal underwear!), and I am half tempted to drive the 2.5 hours home next weekend just to get my coat…and see my family. Of course.

Tonight, I made scones for the apartment. Baking is my cheap therapy, so to speak. That’s actually not a good term for it, if you add up the cost of ingredients! Either way, I love it. My roommate, L, is very into documenting every moment of the semester, and we weren’t allowed to eat them until she’d documented Scone Night.

Tomorrow is “El Derbi,” which for Real Madrid fans means it’s that time of year where we play that other team from Madrid, Atleti.

Atletico Madrid is doing fairly well this season, and so it should be an exciting match. RM is currently undefeated and in first place in La Liga, while Atletico is in 7th (out of 20 teams). They’ve also  been having a bit of a goal streak, lately (two of the last couple of games resulted in six goals scored by RM!). Goltober was a beautiful time.

Cristiano Ronaldo celebrates after scoring his second goal of the match against Hercules.

However, their last match, a Champions League match against AC Milan, ended in a 2-2 draw. Here’s to hoping that they’re back in tip top form for tomorrow’s game (although I suppose its technically already tomorrow, being that its past midnight). El Derbi should be an exciting experience, and I’ve got fingers crossed for my boys. ¡Hala Madrid!

Remember that bet I made that I would keep a blog for at least two months?

Yeah, that worked out well. Well, it’s been almost two months exactly, and here is entry number two! In a fit of post-daylights savings inspiration, I’ve decided I simply must pursue bloggery whole-heartedly. It is with renewed vigor that I am going to write at least an entry a week. Some entries may only contain a sentence, but entries will be published.

There will also be pictures added at some point. Because blogs without pictures are boring, duh.

I can’t think of a theme for this blog, so I suppose it will just contain my insomniac ramblings. Many may be about football (the European kind), particularly La Liga. I’m a fledgling football fan, but being the natural researcher that I am, I’m trying to cram hundreds of years of history and stats into my head as fast as possible. I hate being a “noob” in most arenas in life, and it is no different with football. However, I think I may try to keep it light on my blog, as I’ve learned that there are a few topics where extended discussion can only lead to no good.

Therefore, there will be little to no discussion of religion, politics, and I suppose…sports on this blog. In the words of dear singing Benjamin Franklin from the nerdtastic musical, 1776: “The things I write are only light extemporania / I won’t put politics on paper; it’s a mania.”

Here’s to entry number two!
